W.I.L.D., established in 1979, is for everyone who loves the unspoiled outdoors, from experienced mountaineers to those who have never before slept out under the stars. We offer outings in winter and summer; in deserts, mountains, forests and jungles. Our trips are led by professional naturalists and wilderness guides eager to share knowledge and appreciation of the wildflowers, trees, birds, beasts, and geological features that make every wilderness experience richer and more rewarding. These are not sedentary bus tours but active, mostly self-propelled experiences. Small groups insure plenty of individual attention and minimum impact on the land. Check out our current schedule of events and expeditions.
Suzanne Swedo, director of W.I.L.D., has backpacked the mountains of every continent. She has led groups into the wilderness for over 30 years and teaches wilderness survival and natural science for individuals, schools, universities, museums and organizations such as Yosemite Conservancy, Point Reyes National Seashore Association, and the Sierra Club.
She is the author of numerous books. She lectures and consults about backpacking, botany and survival on radio and television as well as in print.
